Human Remains

U.E.6139 Right bipartite patella from a generally well-preserved, yet incomplete skeleton of a young adult of possible male sex. The remains were found in a single burial at the 3rd Order of Our Lady of Carmo burial site (19th-century Porto, Portugal). They were excavated in 2006.

The mostly complete cranium U.E.6434, with the exception of a fragment in the intersection of the parietals and occipital. Based on the morphological assessment, it was classified as being, possibly, of a male adult. The remains were found at the 3rd Order of Our Lady of Carmo burial site (19th-century Porto, Portugal). They were excavated in 2006.

U.E.6139 Left Femur femur of a young adult (possibly male). We observe a fracture of the proximal extremity of the femur with a very poor realignment and significant remodelling. The femur is approximately 5 centimetres shorter compared to the right femur. The human remains were found in a single burial at the 3rd Order of Our Lady of Carmo burial site (19th-century Porto, Portugal). They were excavated in 2006.

The U.E.1096 vertebra displays severe lytic lesions on the inferior surface of the body, along with reactive osteophytic growth and hypervascularization on the superior surface and anterior portion, strongly suggesting vertebral tuberculosis. The element was recovered from a secondary deposition at Porto’s Order of Carmo burial site and exhumed in 2023.

Cranium U.E.6451, belonging to a young adult, possibly male. There is a fracture of the right nasal bone, with bone changes noted in the ethmoid and vomer. Evidence of remodelling visible. The remains belong to a single burial found at the 3rd Order of Our Lady of Carmo burial site(19th-century Porto, Portugal). They were exhumed in 2006.

Mandible U.E.6451, from a well-preserved skeleton of a young adult (possible male). The specimen exhibits widespread alveolar recession across all in situ teeth. Pathologies include severe crown destruction on the second left molar due to a carious lesion, and a localized periapical lesion at the root of the missing left canine. Evidence of ante-mortem tooth loss is present at the sites of the first and second left molars. The remains belong to a single burial found at the 3rd Order of Our Lady of Carmo burial site(19th-century Porto, Portugal). They were exhumed in 2006.

U.E.6435 vertebral column of a middle-aged person, possibly male, showing flowing ossifications along the anterolateral aspect of the 5th – 12th thoracic vertebrae, and 1st and 2nd lumbar vertebrae. It is a Possible case of diffuse idiopathic skeletal hyperostosis (DISH). Extraspinal manifestations, including hyperostotic spurs at the olecranon process of the right humerus, are present. Presence of thoracic scoliosis, which may have been exacerbated by DISH. The remains were found at the 3rd Order of Our Lady of Carmo burial site(19th-century Porto, Portugal). They were exhumed in 2006.

U.E.5952 left tibia from a skeleton of a young adult, possibly female. The proximal extremity shows significant changes, with the articular facet having acquired a deepened concave shape, with a dense bone surface. The lateral condyle surface shows a discrete fracture line, with a slightly raised margin alongside the intercondyloid eminence. Changes may be the result of impact trauma. The remains were found at the 3rd Order of Our Lady of Carmo burial site(19th-century Porto, Portugal). They were exhumed in 2006.

U.E.6451 5th lumbar vertebra and sacrum, belonging to a skeleton of a young adult, possibly male. It shows a complete fusion of the 5th lumbar vertebra to the body of the 1st sacral vertebrae. There is a compression of the right side of the lumbar vertebra’s body, with anterior slippage suggesting possible spondylolisthesis. A significant bone growth bridging the lumbar vertebra and the first sacral vertebra, specifically  on the anterior side, is also present.  The remains were found at the 3rd Order of Our Lady of Carmo burial site(19th-century Porto, Portugal). They were exhumed in 2006.
